Hoots for your Birthday!

In honor of my mom's birthday, I have created a little something special and unique to send her way (Montana.)

Mom has long had an affinity for owls. When I was younger I didn't really get it...owls? She literally has hundreds of them displayed around her house. And now, as an adult, I can see the owl's beauty and wisdom, and looking now at some of her unique collection, many of them have a retro-vintage feel. Takes me back, I guess.

So after many years of being gifted with owl statues, decorations, yard art, and everything owl under the sun...what's left you ask?

Well, I have recently grown fond of engraving on bamboo. Bamboo is a sustainable and fast-growing wood source that is in no danger of extinction. It also has very beautiful lines and colors, and looks beautiful when lasered.

So for her gift, I decided to engrave for her a bamboo lazy susan for her dining room table. I came across a unique "owl tree" design, and with some minor alterations and color separations, here is the result...

I love how you can see the lines, and the differences in their engraved colors. This particular graphic called to me because of it's folk-artsy feel, with it's heart-in-hand accents. So sweet and with a natural quality.

Above the design, I engraved a quote from a classic fairy-tail about the wise old owl:

A wise old owl sat on an oak; The more he saw the less he spoke; the less he spoke the more he heard; Why aren't we like that wise old bird?

It was perfection for this piece, and I am pleased with it's outcome.

Happiest Birthday Mom!

The Beauty is in the Details

Wood is probably my favorite laserable medium... the beauty is clearly in the details. I absolutely love to work with warm brown textures and uneven grains. Imperfect wood with knots and mixed hues makes for a timeless piece of work.

For this project, I mixed my love of warm wood with a favorite graphic of mine. I stumbled across a beautiful 12 inch square acacia wood plate, and immediately imagined this classic family tree with it's swirly branches and scattered leaves.

Ideal for display on a simple plate stand, makes a beautiful gift and timeless keepsake.

see you soon-

the journey begins... a little about me

Welcome to my laserbird blog!

This adventure has been a long time coming, and it's purpose is to share my ideas and my creative energy, and to share with the world what it is that I do.

I find that I feel most creative when I am surrounded by creative people. Clever ideas (and people) inspire and excite me!

So who am I?

I am a work at home mom who decided to leave the big leagues to chase my dream of beginning a small business. It has been a strange, scary, liberating, wonderful, and frustrating experience to say the least! But I have tried to make the most of it.

I have always been "crafty" and I consider myself an "idea person." I absolutely love a good brainstorming session, and sometimes my best ideas seem to blossom from the most unlikely sources. I have many more plans and ideas (notebooks, literally full of them) than I could ever actually complete. But I keep them all, every scrap... just in case, someday, I need them.

I love:
indie, wood, paper, pink, birds, notebooks, John Mayer, iced tea, etsy, and yes...Twilight.

So that's me, in a nutshell.

Talk to you soon-

Kat
